Center for German and European Studies

Welcome

Launched in April 2013, Chung-Ang University’s DAAD-Center for German and European Studies (ZeDEDs) is preparing for a qualitative leap beyond laying the foundation for research, education, and the business of exchange. Chung-Ang University’s Center for German and European Studies, supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), is the third Asian Institution to be selected after Tokyo University in Japan and Peking University in China. We are committed to research and academic exchange in Germany and Europe, master’s and doctoral level graduate education, academic and cultural cooperation between Korea and Germany, and the exchange of German and other European researchers with Korea.

The German Academic Exchange Service, the world’s largest international academic exchange support organization, has supported the Center for German and European Studies at top universities in 11 countries – including Harvard University and the University of California Berkeley – since 1991. The Center for German and European Studies in each country promotes humanities and social science academic and professional training in Germany and Europe, academic-political-public discussion, and academic and cultural exchanges between Germany and other parts of the world.

Chung-Ang University’s Center for German and European Studies is the only German-European research and education institution established in Korea with the support of the German government. Scholars produce outstanding research on key topics such as the social market economy, welfare system, politics and civil society, environmental policy, modern culture, division and unification, and contribute to international academic development.

The Center has also established the Graduate School of German-European Studies, and introduced a master’s and doctorate program, which emphasizes professional competence, international perspective, and connection to the field in three specialized areas, such as economics and welfare, education and environment, and culture and media. The Graduate School of German-European Studies focuses on nurturing global talent by financially supporting participation in various special programs every year, such as long-term overseas training and summer schools for graduate students at sister universities in Europe including Germany and France.

Germany and other European countries are becoming increasingly important partners for Korea today in many ways, including areas such as economics, politics, and culture. By expanding our understanding of these societies through academic exchanges, we will be able to further develop a relationship of friendship and solidarity with Germany and Europe. At the center of these efforts is Chung-Ang University’s Center for German and European Studies.
